Server Rack

Rack servers are computers which have been set up to function as servers and are configured to be used in a central framework which is known as a rack. These can also be known as rack mounted servers. Rack server fits into a slot in the rack and coordinates all the sharing which is conducted throughout the facility.

A rack server is sometimes confused with being a tower server, but there is a difference. A tower server tends to be a stand-alone cabinet, whereas a rack server allows access to the servers via a minimum of two opening enclosures on the sides of the rack.

An advantage of using a rack is that many servers can be placed in to the slots on the rack. Each of these can then be connected to each other, which in turn can allow a secondary server to control the network should the primary server fail for some reason. Servers which are connected can also be set up to control different parts of the network and can exchange data as and when needed.

Within a rack server, a server is held in place with small screws which are based in the back of the bay. This ensures that a server doesn't accidentally fall out of the rack. Also, because the rack is of an open design, cool airflow can easily be directed around the servers helping to ventilate them and keep the servers at a regulated temperature.

Rack servers by design are fairly small in size and don't take up a lot of floor space. Due to the small size, the racks can be placed in small rooms, and as long as there is plenty of air flow, the server rack will need little or no maintenance.
